A Taste of Calistoga

Known for its authenticity, The Calistoga Inn Restaurant and Brewery reflects the tranquil community located at the northern tip of the Napa Valley. A sojourn composed of an Inn with a detached private cottage, English-style  pub, mobile  kitchen, commercial craft brewery, and an indoor- outdoor restaurant, the historic property is a playground for the modern-day voyager.

For 32 years, owner Michael Dunsford and his Mother, Rosie, have created a local haven for everyone to enjoy. Bringing  old- world charm to the heart of Calistoga, the European-style Inn was built in 1887. With seventeen updated  rooms, the 200-year- old property has maintained the original footprint while incorporating contemporary comfort and design.

The adjacent pub, restaurant,  and beer garden offer a fine selection of local wines with a wide array of beverages and spirits. The contemporary cuisine embodies the quality and elegance affiliated with the Napa Valley, preserving a casual and relaxed ambiance.

While Dunsford studied enology and brewing  science at UC Davis, the opportunity to purchase the landmark property presented itself in 1989. Together, Michael and Rosie transformed the property with a vision to create a space for locals to enjoy while welcoming guests from all over to experience everything Calistoga has to offer.

“Our goal is to create an authentic, intimate experience that is organic, easy- going and approachable,” said Dunsford. “Our Inn is perfect for the traveler on a budget. We have an active clientele that wants a place to rest their head before a day of adventure.”

Built in 1987 in the original Calistoga Inn water tower, the commercial craft brewery encompasses a 7-barrel gas-fired brewhouse designed by Dr. Michael Lewis of UC Davis, a previous professor of Dunsford’s. Offering a portfolio of five principal beers: American Wheat Ale, Palisades Pilsner, Calistoga Red Ale, West Coast I.P.A. & Blue Collar Porter, the brewery was the first of its kind in Napa County since the end of prohibition in 1933. “After a day of wine tasting, the palate can burn out,” explained Dunsford. “Enjoying a nice and refreshing handcrafted beer can be unbelievably palate cleansing.”

Under the direction of Head Brewmaster Daniel Reynolds, the brewery produces 450 barrels and offers  a selection  of seasonal beers throughout the year. It also offers beer to go in 16 oz. cans, 32 oz. growlers and 64 oz. growlers.

An extension of the business,  Executive Chef Santiago Garcia and his team of highly qualified professionals bring The Calistoga  Inn Restaurant and Brewery  experience  to life with their new mobile  trailer  containing a full commercial kitchen for off-site events. “We wanted to bring our  unique   experience anywhere and everywhere,” expressed Dunsford.

With a warm and inviting inn, a large  outdoor patio, a state-of-the-art brewery, three onsite bars, world-class  cuisine, catering and event services, and live music nightly from May-October, The Calistoga Inn Restaurant and Brewery is a home away from home. It is an authentic experience to behold that provides something  for everyone  celebrating Calistoga, California’s community and culture.
