Mt. Veeder, Personally: Inside Fontanella Family Winery

A winding ascent up Partrick Road delivers you to one of Napa Valley’s most compelling vantage points: Fontanella Family Winery. Oak branches arch overhead as the road climbs toward Mt. Veeder, an appellation revered for its structured, mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Downtown Napa sits just ten minutes away, yet the atmosphere here feels entirely removed. It’s defined by open skies, steep vineyard rows, and a sense of personal welcome that large-scale tasting rooms are rarely able to replicate.

Family owned and operated by Karen and Jeff Fontanella, the winery reflects pedigree and perseverance. Jeff’s winemaking trajectory began at University of California, Davis, where an early course in enology redirected him from medical school toward the cellar. He honed his craft at Opus One and ZD Wines. Karen, an attorney by training, became both life partner and business partner after the two met—memorably—at a Jimmy Buffett concert, where Jeff arrived bearing a magnum of Chardonnay. Today, their sons Drew and John represent the next chapter: Drew, a high school senior headed to study business in college, and John, currently studying viticulture at UC Davis, both plan to one day contribute to the family estate.

In 2005, the couple purchased a 26-acre Mt. Veeder property and began building what would become a resilient mountain estate. A 6.0 earthquake and the Partrick/Nuns fire tested that resolve, yet the winery emerged intact, adopting the word “unbreakable” as both philosophy and promise. Subsequent expansion, including the acquisition of an adjacent 55 acres and new hillside plantings, cemented their long-term commitment to estate-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.

For visitors, however, the story unfolds glass by glass, and barrel by barrel. Every Fontanella tasting experience includes a visit to the barrel room for a sample drawn directly from the barrel—an insider’s preview that underscores the winery’s small-production focus.

The Fontanella Journey Tasting is the cornerstone experience. Guests are guided through four current releases while overlooking the estate vineyards that produced them. The experience includes a curated cheese plate.

Weekday travelers can opt for the Golden Mornings Journey Tasting, offered Monday through Thursday at a preferred rate. Morning light across Mt. Veeder carries a particular clarity, and the early time slots provide an especially serene introduction to the property.

For collectors and Cabernet devotees, the Reserve Tour & Tasting elevates the experience further. This curated exploration highlights the flagship Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Per Sempre, a multi-vintage, solera-style Cabernet that reflects both innovation and patience.

“At Fontanella, hospitality is deeply personal,” says Karen. (Winery dogs Hobie and Trigger often greet guests, while Santo the cat patrols with proprietary confidence.) “Jeff and I want guests to feel like they’ve stepped into our lives for a moment, experiencing the warmth of our family, the passion behind our wines, and the unmistakable character of Mt. Veeder that shapes everything we do.”
