Every fall, the Napa Valley art scene becomes wholly accessible to all. Studio doors swing open, artists step away from their easels and kilns, and the public is invited in. Not simply to browse, but to experience the living, breathing reality of how art gets made.

Napa Valley Open Studios, organized by the Art Association Napa Valley, is a self-guided public tour of individual and group artist workspaces spanning the Valley from Napa to Calistoga. Held later in September, this free event is built around one simple idea: bringing artists and the community together in the spaces where creativity actually happens.

The experience is unlike anything you’ll find in a traditional gallery or museum. There are no recorded audio guides, no velvet ropes, no hushed reverential distance between viewer and work. Instead, visitors move through real working studios, watching demonstrations, asking questions, and absorbing the energy of a space shaped entirely by one person’s artistic vision. The annual Open Studios Directory serves as both map and guide, helping visitors plot their route through dozens of locations.

The artists represented span a wide range of disciplines: painting, ceramics, photography, glasswork, woodworking, jewelry design, and more. Works are available for purchase directly from the artist, making it one of the more intimate and accessible ways to collect art in the region.

Behind the scenes, the event is a considerable undertaking managed entirely by volunteers. Budgeting, artist outreach, tour map design, advertising sales, sponsor coordination, print deadlines, and community engagement all fall on this group of people who show up out of love for art and the Valley.

Member Gary Lavender, has seen that dedication up close. “What makes this organization and its achievements year after year so special is the successful performance of so many tasks by a dedicated group of volunteers,” he says. “People make this event happen for the love of art and community. I volunteered initially for fundraising, but understood more after a meeting with Ronda Schaer, Chair of the Yountville Arts Commission. Great insights and an outstanding organization, along with Yountville Parks and Recreation, truly helped us achieve more for our efforts.”

For participating artists, Open Studios offers something that’s difficult to replicate independently — broad visibility, a direct connection with the public, and a platform that advocates for the larger Napa Valley arts community. Lavender puts it plainly: “By opening their studios and inviting the public, it provides a humanizing factor to the art and the artist and their approach.”

That humanizing quality may be the event’s most lasting contribution to the region’s cultural life. Napa Valley is known mostly for wine and landscape; Open Studios insists on another truth — that creativity lives here too, in the hands of neighbors.

Napa Valley Open Studios takes place the last two full weekends of September. The tour directory and map are distributed about six weeks before the event and are available at locations throughout the Valley.
